Chapter 12: We Shall Never Forget — Commemoration Projects
"The Jewish Child in the Holocaust"
As part of the commemoration endeavor I wrote the book "Alive from the Ashes," which was translated into English, Czech, and German. Memorial films were produced: "A Journey to the Past" + "Part of My Life," and the film "Alive from the Ashes" with subtitles in eight languages.
The latter was broadcast several times on Channel One during Holocaust Remembrance Days in 2005–2007, and was also adapted into a full-length film by Czech State Television under the title "ZROZENI Z POPELA" — "Born from the Ashes" — and screened a number of times on Czech television.
I produced the album "The Jewish Child in the Holocaust"
The painter Moshe (Moshele) Bernstein was born and raised in the same region of eastern Poland from which I came, yet we only met in Israel, where we were close friends for many years. In early 1992 I proposed that he paint several dozen charcoal drawings on the subject of the Jewish child in exile and in the Holocaust, from which I would select about a dozen for a printed album that I would publish. Moshele produced an exceptionally impressive series of pictures. I selected 12 drawings and printed a limited, numbered edition of 180 copies, prefaced by an introduction by Dr. Basok and incorporating a dedication poem by the poet Yaakov Orland, laureate of the Israel Prize. The text was printed in Hebrew, Yiddish, and English.
